The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu addressing Okigwe residents in Abuja
The ambition of the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Uwajumogu, to represent the people of Okigwe Senatorial zone of the state at the upper chambers of the National Assembly, in next year’s election, gathered momentum last week, as the Speaker paid a familiarization visit to indigenes of the zone who are residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
The visit which was expectedly, aimed at galvanizing the support of well-meaning citizens of the area to further foster the collective growth and development of the zone however, turned a carnival as the people, apparently satisfied with the appreciable impacts and giant strides the Speaker has made in the zone, also took turns to congratulate him on the gains recorded so far, while pledging their continued support and solidarity to his aspiration, which according to them, would take Okigwe zone to another level of all-round development.
The Speaker had already told the gathering in his remarks that the total emancipation of the zone and its people from developmental backwardness was non-negotiable, as according to him, time has come for Okigwe zone to record its developmental fair-share, as currently being witnessed in other zones across the state.
Rt. Hon. Uwajumogu, informed them that adequate plans have been evolved to sustain the level of pragmatic development recorded in the area, adding that the Rescue Mission Administration in the state, through the instrumentality of his office, had ensured the appreciable level of transformations, which he said were evident in the nooks and crannies of the zone.
According to him, part of the key project attracted by his office to the zone include:
The rapid urbanization of Okigwe town with street lights, the over 15kms of rural road networks in each of the six local government areas of the zone, as well as the Ultra-Modern New General Hospitals and one detached primary school storey building in all electoral wards in the zone.
Others are, the resuscitated Avutu Poultry farm from its moribund state, the Malaysia International Market, Obowo, the Umunakanu campus of the Imo state Polytechnic in Ehime Mbano, the Imo state college of Education (Technical) Ihitte Uboma, the proposed Imo Galician University Onuimo, the new Okigwe stadium, princess Hotel Okigwe, water projects, series of empowerment of women and youths into meaningful ventures, among others.
He further hinted that the rationale behind these laudable projects within three (3) years of the present administration in the state, was borne out of the desire to open up the economy of the zone and bring it at par with other zones, while giving the people a sense of belonging.
The Speaker, finally called on the good people of the zone to embrace the current wind of change, which he said had transversed the length and breadth of the area, while assuring his utmost desire to surpass his current achievements if given the mandate to serve his people as a senator in next year’s general election.
In their separate speeches, the Okigwe people, who explained that the visit was the first time any aspirant or elected political office holder from the zone would come and interface with them, also bared their minds on the need for relevant key players and actors in Okigwe zone to come together and champion the unity and sustainable growth of the zone, adding that it was time for Okigwe people to support and rally round the Speaker, whom they said has shown the needed capacity, maturity, experience, passion and zeal to drive and transform the fortunes of Okigwe zone for the collective good of the people.
