Delta State political stakeholders have reacted to the 1.4 million votes promise made by Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori to President Bola Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
While announcing his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), recently, Oborevwori who joined the ruling party along with his deputy, Monday Onyeme, his immediate predecessor and the PDP 2023 vice presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structures in the state assured Tinubu of 1.4 million votes from Delta State in the coming election.
However, observers have tagged the targeted number of votes as illusionary going by the volume of votes in the state, voter turnout and traditional voting patterns.
In the 2023 General Election, Delta State registered 3,227,697 voters, with 2,989,514 permanent voter cards collected. However, only 615,341 valid votes were cast in the presidential election, representing a mere 19 per cent of voters registered.
Although Oborevwori won the governorship election with 57 per cent of the vote cast, the PDP got only 26 per cent of the votes in the presidential election, despite the outgoing governor, Okowa, being Atiku Abubakar’s running mate.
The APC was further behind with 15 per cent of the vote, as Peter Obi of the Labour Party took the state with 56 per cent.
Considering these factors, political analysts believe that Oborevwori and his associates will find it difficult if not impossible to deliver on their promise to Tinubu.
