A once bright political career might just become a shadow of what it was meant to be.
Why you might want to ask, simply because of a lack of loyalty. In politics, and oftentimes too in life, only the loyal get to the top because they always remember never to burn their bridges.
Mojisola Lasbat Meranda might have been oblivious to this when ambition drove her to accept the lure of being the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly at the age of 44.
It was a feat no one had achieved in Lagos State, not even the beautiful Funmi Tejuoso who got only close to being a Deputy Speaker.
As the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Meranda played second fiddle to the Speaker, Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa.
Perhaps contented with her office, Meranda soon started singing a different song when the marauders accused Obasa of misconduct and abuse of office. Unproven, yet they became the prosecutor and the judge, and Obasa who was not given room to defend himself was simply sent to the gulags never to be a Speaker again or so they thought.
While ambition might be good, it’s always said that one should know their capabilities and limitations.
Maybe if Meranda had known hers, she wouldn’t be where she is today, especially as reports confirm the impending return of Obasa as Speaker.
A powerful APC stakeholders meeting had in attendance names such as the former National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, ex-Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and lawmakers. At the meeting , it was agreed that Obasa’s removal was illegal and that the Assembly should reinstate him.
With this, it is all but certain that Meranda’s tenure as Speaker has ended even before it started.
Besides that, what does the future hold for the career of the lawmaker who has been representing the Apapa I constituency in the Lagos House of Assembly since June 2015, a woman whose greatest virtues are listed as Honesty, Hard work, Transparency and Integrity? This is very important especially as history and politicians have a way of remembering disloyalty.
The answer to this time will tell.
