New Twist In Attempt To Recall Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

Days after announcing that promoters of the Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Recall petition left out their contact addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses from the petition, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has now revealed that it has received the information.

Acknowledging that it received the petition to recall the Senator representing Kogi Central, INEC noted that the document did not meet the requirements for consideration.

INEC pointed out that the petitioners’ representatives failed to include their contact information as Clause 1(f) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall mandated.

However, on Wednesday, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, provided an update, revealing that the missing details had now been submitted in a letter dated March 26, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of INEC.

As outlined in Clause 2(a) of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024, Olumekun confirmed that a letter has also been sent to notify Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of the receipt of the petition. This notification was delivered to her official address and was also copied to the presiding officer of the Senate. Furthermore, the letter has been published on INEC’s official website.

The next step, according to Olumekun, is for the Commission to verify the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to ensure that the petition is backed by more than 50% of the registered voters in the Kogi Central Constituency. This verification process will take place in the coming days, and the Commission has pledged to publicly release the results, which will determine the subsequent course of action.

INEC assured the public that the entire process would be conducted with transparency and openness.
