Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popular as Portable, will regain his freedom soon.
The singer is currently being remanded at the Oke Kura Correctional Centre in Ilorin, Kwara State, following his inability to make bail in a criminal defamation suit filed against him by Fuji musician Saheed Osupa.
According to political activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, Portable will regain his freedom soon, as he has spoken with Osupa to withdraw the charges against the singer.
In a post on Facebook earlier today, Sowore revealed that he had a detailed conversation with Osupa, during which the musician clarified the motive behind the suit.
Sowore added that Osupa clarified that his actions were not meant to intimidate or harm Portable but rather to clear himself of any perceived threats to the singer. However, he acknowledged that involving the police could be misinterpreted as an act of repression.
“Today, I had an extended discussion with King Saheed Osupa Akorede, highlighting that the Nigeria Police Force has no right to criminalize civil disputes,” Sowore wrote.
He added: “Saheed explained that his use of the police was intended to demonstrate that he had no ill intentions toward Portable. Still, he recognized that it could be seen as a misuse of police authority.”
