The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular Lagos socialite, Emeka Okonkwo Daniel, fondly called E-Money.
Okonkwo was arrested by operatives of the EFCC for alleged abuse of the Naira and defacement of foreign currency.
A report by Punch quoted multiple EFCC sources who confirmed that the arrest took place on Monday night at his residence in the Omole area of Lagos.
E-Money is accused of spraying United States dollars at a public event, a practice considered a violation of the Foreign Exchange Act.
According to the earlier mentioned report, an EFCC insider confirmed the development, saying, “We arrested E-Money on Monday night for allegedly abusing the Naira and defacing U.S. currency. Spraying dollars in public is in breach of financial regulations.”
The source added that preliminary investigations are underway and that E-Money will be charged to court once inquiries are completed.
Another official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the socialite is being transported to Abuja for further questioning by investigators.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale is yet to comment officially on the development.
Barely a year ago, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Emy Cargo and Shipping Services Limited, was investigated at the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, over alleged N1, 209,200,000 dispute with a vehicle dealing company, Autocorp Limited, in Lagos State.
Then, the sales manager for the vehicle dealing company, Patricia Iduwre revealed that the company contracted Okonkwo to clear eight vehicles in 2020/2021.
According to Iduwre, the vehicles comprised six TXL Prado and two Lexus jeeps valued at N1, 209,200,000. She addied that despite Okonkwo clearing the vehicles, the company had yet to take delivery of them till date.
