Simon Achuba, the recently impeached Deputy Governor of Kogi State, has revealed that in the wake of his impeachment, he was placed under house arrest and treated like a common criminal by the powers that be in the state.
Recall that Achuba was impeached by the Kogi State House of Assembly over charges of misconduct brought against him.
Speaking with journalists in on Sunday, October 20, in Lokoja, the state capital, Achuba described his impeachment as an act of lawlessness, adding that lawlessness reigns supreme in Kogi state at the moment.
He said Kogi State was fast degenerating into what he called a ‘Banana Republic.’
Achuba said he was treated like common criminal moments after the State House of Assembly made its pronouncement on Friday, October 19.
According to him, security details attached to him as the state’s number two citizen were withdrawn and others thereafter barricaded his official residence, placing him under “house arrest.”
He revealed that the power supply to his official residence was disconnected and when the technician tried, he was stopped by the newly deployed security agents.
“As I address you, my personal belongings are still there in my official residence. I don’t have access to them,” he told journalists.
Achuba insisted he remains the deputy governor of Kogi, adding that any judge who presides over the swearing-in of another deputy governor in the state would be sanctioning illegality. He there called on the federal government to stop the “lawlessness playing out in Kogi,” saying what is playing out is not good for democracy and rule of law, while expressing optimism of getting justice in the court soon.
Recall that Achuba had been having a running battle with the governor of the state, Yahaya Bello.
