Today, I am privileged to join millions of Nigerians, Africans and indeed the world to celebrate the LANDMARK 70th Birthday’ to Charly Boy, my friend, brother, and the UNIDSPUTED King Of Radical Boys.
Watch video and help me celebrate a friend who continues to roll in his element even at 70!
Dear Charly Boy, At 70 you remained a force that both the oppressed and the oppressors continued to reckon with just as much as they did in your 20s and 30s
That that both young and old still feel comfortable calling you Charlie Boy at 70, without feeling funny about it, is a testament to your staying power and your evergreen brand and your inimitable philosophy of contrarian expression through positive creativity
We first met as adversaries and I once called you a rebel without a cause because I could not really discern the specific issue you were agitating against. However over the years as I paid more attention to you, and your brand and interacted with you on a personal level, I have come to realize that labeling you with a specific or singular cause would be a great disservice to a man for all seasons.
You are a man whose very essence redefined guerrilla agitation against oppression in any form, and a human brand that cannot be limited by identification with one narrow cause or agenda. Your whole existence itself has been dedicated to one overarching cause: You exist to Fight Oppression and Injustice anywhere you find it whether it concerns you personally or not.
Your lifelong agitation for justice can therefore not be labeled or pigeonholed into a specific cause, because like water always finds Its level, your natural instincts against injustice always found expression at any oppressive situation wherever you find it.
Sir, I celebrate you today for your indomitable spirit and your constant and refreshing reminders that we do not have to take oppression lying down. You showed that anyone can stand against injustice anywhere they find it with whatever they have, even if it’s only an Okada bicycle.
AT 70, when most in your age bracket have retired to sedentary lifestyles of stagnant, even if luxurious, vegetation, you remained a champion for youthful agitation against injustice in the land.
As a man born to fight injustice, you have no permanent friends or permanent enemies. You are only permanently against oppression and injustice IN ANY FORM, BIG OR SMALL.
That attitude in itself is a legacy that qualified you as a Legend even while you are still with us in the flesh.
I used to think your ability to still be a rallying point for youths at 70 is a reflection on the complacency or ineptitude of our youths but I am now convinced it has nothing to do with the complacency of the youths but with your over towering personality that keeps recreating itself every few years in a way that never soured to your admirers OR FOES, old and youths alike.
Your OFTEN dramatic, jaw-dropping but always creative agitations remain as commanding today as they were in the year you first burst onto nation’s consciousness with your culturally shocking persona as a crossdresser in your late 20s
Charly Boy, I celebrate you on your 70th birthday sir.
Truth be told, Very few have been able to carry their quest for justice into their later years of comfortable pleasures but you remain as charged today and as relevant today as you were in 1980 despite having become very financially comfortable yourself like some of the oppressors that still break out in sweat when you start any new round of agitation against them.
Dear Charly Boy, I raise a toast to your continued good health, I toast your constantly regenerating creativity and i drink to your limitless energy for societal agitation.
May your fire never dim and may you never run out of creative ways to command attention to injustice everywhere.
People Let’s all drink to continued health and More power for the Living Legend Of Contrarian Expression!
