The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has confirmed that one of its staff has been shot while another is in a critical condition.
This development follows the Saturday, September 19 governorship election held in Edo State.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the Etsako local government area of the state while electorates were voting.
The collation officer in Etsako Central local government area where the incident took place, Professor Godswill Alan Lukman, confirmed the incident.
He made the disclosure on Sunday, September 20, at the collation centre in Benin City, while giving a situation report on the election conducted in the local government.
According to him, the victim was not dead, but in critical condition at a hospital in the state.
Lukman, who noted that the incident occurred due to violence at the venue of the election, added that another ad-hoc official was cut in the face.
He explained that some hoodlums suspected to be political thugs stormed the venue and disrupted the exercise, forcing the electorate who have come to vote to run to safety.
He said the election could not be concluded at the polling area due to the incident.
Meanwhile, one person was reportedly shot at Ologbo in Ikpoba Okah local government area of Edo state during the conduct of the governorship election.
It was gathered that the individual was shot when police were trying to enforce crowd control.
The incident was said to have been confirmed by a traditional ruler, Jason Owen Akenzua who said he had called the divisional police officer over the incident.
