NIN: INEC Set To Make National ID Compulsory For Voters’ Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that it is planning to make the National Identification Number (NIN), a condition for the voters’ registration exercise.

The electoral commission believes this  will help tackle the problem of underage voting in some parts of the country.

An annonymous National Commissioners at INEC made this disclosure, adding that the final decision would soon be reached and officially announced to the public.

The commissioner described NIN as “ideal” and what should be ordinarily used for voting exercise across the country.

“The NIN is the ideal. When we want to begin the continuous voter registration, we may consider it because ordinarily, a national identity card is what should be used for voting.

“When the PVC was introduced, it was meant to be in use for 10 years and the assumption was that within those 10 years, the national identity card would be in use by a majority of Nigerians.

“I can tell you that the NIN will be one of the preconditions for registration when the CVR starts. We are trying to harmonise all databases.”

Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, had earlier argued the NIN enrollment and linkage with SIM card will help in tackling crimes and fishing out criminals and fraudsters.
