Protesters Shutdown Seplat Petroleum Facility

Protesters stormed a crude oil facility owned by Seplat Petroleum Development Company, (SPDL) on Thursday.

The facility is located in Ikweghwu Community, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.

The protesters who arrived in the early hours of Thursday disrupted the activities at the facility, demanding jobs and infrastructural development in the community.

They decried the commitment level of the company on several issues concerning them, saying that they have not been benefiting from the oil wealth of the community.

Carrying placards with several inscriptions including ‘we can’t be suffering in our own land’, ‘we need our Memorandum of Understanding now’ ‘We need access control’ ‘8 years of slavery, we say no’, they alleging oppression and intimidation from the management of the company, requesting an end to it all.

The President General of the Community, Comrade David Uyelaju, who spoke with journalists demanded a clearly written Memorandum of Understanding, MOU from Seplat, adding that their sons and daughters should be given jobs.

Further, Uyelaju said that the community has not been treating them well, demanding action from the company within 14 days, regarding the peace talks that have lasted for more than 8 years.

“We have been understanding, we have continued to be patient and they are taking us for granted, even our Royal father has had to intervene in this, yet they have refused to sign the MOU”

On his part, the Secretary of the community, Duke Dino Ayerunu said that they had resolved to remain at the company’s gate to press home their demands
