A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu has reacted to the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the new boss of the commission.

Reacting through his lawyer Tosin Ojaomo, Magu said the “appointment came to me as a shock” as justice has not been served in respect to the allegations of power abuse levelled against him.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday, February 16, nominated 40 years old Bawa, a trained EFCC prosecutor as Magu’s successor.

Buhari appointed the substantive chairman in a letter addressed to the Nigerian Senate.

Ojaomo said that Magu was suspended for an allegation that had not been proven against him, adding that the presidency must come out clean on whether the embattled ex-EFCC boss “has been found wanting or not”.

He stated: “Sincerely, this appointment came to me as a shock. This is because what I was expecting is that there is still an unfinished assignment that was pending. I was expecting that the issue of Magu would have been sorted out before moving to another step.

“But unfortunately, we just got this news today that a new chairman has been nominated by the president and his name has been forwarded to the senate.

“When we talk of justice, you know what justice is all about. As the acting chairman of the commission, he was suspended for an allegation which has not been proven against him.”
