The number of people who have registered for the National Identification Number (NIN) has been revealed.
According to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Ali Isa Pantami, not less than 51 million citizens now have their NINs.
Pantami stated this during a State House press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, April 1, adding that the law compels everyone to take part in the enrollment exercise.
According to him, failure to comply with this directive can attract forfeiture of the right to bank and communication services, including the possibility of serving a jail term of about 14 years.
Further, Pantami noted that the NIN registration is the best way to arrive at the accurate population of the country. The minister disclosed that 189 million Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) have been captured so far through the enrollment.
