The Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed its commitment to working with the Nigerian Army to maintain peace and security across the state.

Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, made this assurance on Thursday during a courtesy visit by Brigadier General Olawale Matthew Oyekola, the 48th Commander of the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, and his team.

Dr. Obasa emphasized that the 40-member legislature is dedicated to ensuring peace and stability in all local government areas of Lagos and welcomes support from relevant authorities.

“I want to assure you of our full support. Our doors are always open. Whenever you need us, simply reach out. We, at the House of Assembly, are here to protect the interests and rights of the people and ensure they fulfill their responsibilities,” Obasa said.

“We cherish peace in Lagos, a state often referred to as a mini-Nigeria. With your presence, we look forward to maintaining the peace we currently enjoy. Our goal is to see Lagos thrive economically, socio-politically, and in terms of infrastructure,” he added, while also praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his policies that have kept the state progressing.

The Speaker also commended the Nigerian military for their bravery and loyalty, especially in their efforts to tackle insecurity in various parts of the country, particularly the Northeast.

In response, Brigadier General Oyekola explained that his visit was to reaffirm the Nigerian Army’s commitment to protecting the people of Lagos. He noted that his return to Lagos, 20 years after serving in the state, highlighted the peaceful nature of the city and the need to preserve this status.

Oyekola called on Lagosians to support the Army, which he described as the third layer of security, with the Nigeria Police Force as the first layer.

“Wearing this uniform does not make us different from the people. We were civilians before becoming soldiers,” he said.

Brigadier General Oyekola assumed command of the 9 Brigade, headquartered in Ikeja, Lagos, on August 21, 2024, after previously serving as Chief of Staff at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI.
