Africa Unite Concert: South African Parliament Guarantee Burna Boy’s Safety
Nigerian musician and African Gaint, Burna Boy, might still get to perform at the Africa Unite Concert slatted for South Africa between November 23 and 24.
A brainchild of Nigeria-based Play Network Africa in partnership with Phambili Media SA, the concert was originally supposed to feature Burna Boy, Kwesa and Jidenna.
However, a petition written by some South African musicians under the aegis of ‘Tshwane Collective’, and sent to the Minister of Arts and Culture has seen the chances of Burna Boy performing at the concert being reduced, as questions about his safety have been asked.
According to the petitioners, the artiste does not deserve to be a part of the show due to an inciteful statement he made a few months ago during the xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
A campaign inspired by South African rapper, AKA, has also not helped matters, as AKA conrinues to demand an apology from the Nigerian singer for inciting hatred.
Burna Boy’s security has however now been guaranteed by a member of the South African Parliament and leader of Economic Freedom Fighters (a South African Political Party), Julius Malema.
Malema who is famous in Nigeria for his stance during the recent xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa lashed out at those campaigning to stop Burna Boy from visiting and performing in South Africa.
The parliamentarian criticised the campaigners on Twitter, stating that he looks forward to receiving and getting entertained by Burna Boy, while promising he will be safe while in Mandela’s country.
