Nigeria’s Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has refuted speculations that soldiers implicated in the killing of police officers by a kidnap kingpin, Bala Hamisu, popularly known as Wadume, are deliberately being shielded from prosecution.
Malami reacted to the position on Wednesday, July 1.
According to him, the government was only giving time to allow the established processes to be consummated.
He said that the affected soldiers were currently being charged before a court-martial in accordance with established laws in the country.
He added that before the military could release their personnel for prosecution, they must also go through their in-house processes.
Malami added that the military will complete its in-house process before releasing its personnel.
Recall that a Federal High Court had ordered the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, to produce the army officers who were alleged to have aided the escape of Wadume in Court.
Justice Binta Nyako ordered Buratai or any other person whose custody the suspects were to provide them in court by March 30. According to her, the court shall enroll the order to the prosecution so that they could serve it to the parties involved.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, filed a 16 counts charge against one Taraba state kidnap kingpin, Bala Hamisu, aka Wadume, alongside 19 other suspects. The charge, dated February 3, borders on terrorism, murder, kidnapping, and illegal arms possession.
