Ex-South African international turn coach, Benni McCarthy, has suffered his first loss as coach of Cape Town City. Benni McCarthy, who recently turned coach, was defeated by Kaizer Chiefs.
Speaking after the match, Benni McCarthy said “This is football. You win some and you loss some.”
The coach, who made six changes to his original team having played in the MTN8 action against Bidvest Wits over the weekend refused to attribute his loss to the changes he made. He rather sang the praises of Amakhosi saying that they deserved the match.

However, he blames the fact that Teko Modise limped off in the first half with a calf problem as what disrupted their rhythm. “With Teko when you get to a certain age the body doesn’t respond like the young boys we have in the team. When we had to change so early it disrupted the rhythm a little bit. That set us a little bit on a back foot,” he added.
Further, McCarthy said “Nah, nah they didn’t let me down. Chiefs were brilliant. Everything they did was going their way. They have a lot of experience, they came also with youth. They looked way more fresher than us,” McCarthy said.
“They were up for it and we were second best. When you don’t take your chances it’s going to be difficult because Chiefs is the kind of team that you give them an opportunity they’re going to take it.
“Today they got two, for us it’s just one loss. Very proud of the boys. They showed they can adapt to any kind of football. We didn’t sit back and let Chiefs dominate, we also took the game to them.”
One of the major changes which the coach made was playing inexperience Sage Stephens for Shu-Aib Walters in goal.
