America’s president, Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 US election, citing the best interests of his party and the nation.
Biden, withdrew from the election on Saturday, July 20, endorsing his Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him as the Democratic nominee.
In a letter published on X, Biden said that he is stepping aside as a candidate in the 2024 election.
The president who had previously expressed intentions to seek reelection, stated that stepping down would allow him to focus entirely on his duties as President for the remainder of his term.
It would be recalled that there had been reports that congressional Democrats had publicly urged the 81-year-old to drop out of the race after his shaky debate performance last month against Republican challenger Donald Trump, 78.
Speaking on his withdrawal from the election, Biden said, “It has been my intention to seek reelection, but I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
He acknowledged the challenges ahead and expressed his commitment to his presidential responsibilities, stating, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden went on to announce his full support and endorsement of Harris as the Democratic nominee for the upcoming presidential election.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” Biden affirmed.
“Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
In her reaction to the endorsement by Biden, Harris said, “I am honored to have the president’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” the vice president said.
“I will do everything in power to unite the Democratic Party – and unite our nation – to defeat Donald Trump,” Harris added.
She also said: “With this selfless and patriotic act, President Biden is doing what he has done throughout his life of service: putting the American people and our country above everything else.”
Meanwhile, the Donald Trump campaign team has reacted to the endorsement of Harris by Biden saying that she would be “even worse” than the outgoing leader.
“Harris will be even worse for the people of our nation than Joe Biden. Harris has been the Enabler in Chief for Crooked Joe this entire time. They own each other’s records, and there is no distance between the two,” the campaign said in a statement.
