A viral report that Access Bank Plc has launched a Bitcoin bank and introduced a cryptocurrency product has been refuted by the financial institution.
In the report in question, the photograph of the Managing Director of the bank, Roosevelt Ogbonna, downloaded from Access Bank’s social media pages is emblazoned with BitcoinBank in a manner that gives the undiscerning eye the wrong impression that the bank is truly in the business.
Another artwork detailing the return on investment from transacting with the fake Access Bank Bitcoin Bank is also used to support the report.
However, a statement from the bank has discredited the report and excerpt of an interview purportedly granted by Ogbonna, adding that the photo of it’s Managing Director was manipulated.
Excerpt of the statement by Access Bank Plc reads,
“For the record, at no time did Mr Ogbonna grant any interview on the subject of a Bitcoin bank or made any comment on cryptocurrency business.
“Access Bank continues to maintain its absolute commitment to excellent practices in accordance with the laws of Nigeria.
“Access Bank is cooperating with the authorities to investigate the source of the fake news to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The board, management and staff remain committed to transparency, outstanding corporate governance, and the promotion of global best practices for the good of our customers and all stakeholders.”
Further, the statement said the bank is cooperating with the authorities to investigate the source of the fake news to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“The board, management and staff remain committed to transparency, outstanding corporate governance, and the promotion of global best practices for the good of our customers and all stakeholders”, the statement said.
Meanwhile, there have been mixed reactions to the report on social media. On Nairaland, a community of contributors, Access Bank was commended for being proactive for calling the attention of it’s customers to the fraud.
“Rippers are constantly exploring new innovations to get at their unsuspecting but greedy victims,” TheGiftedOne wrote.
Iseoluwanimi wrote: “Na wa o, all these people won’t rest. nice to know this early our people should be careful as well. this approach is strong and its good that they noted out this early.”
“Access bank na the bank wen dey run things on a steady,” Itswell commented.
Interestingly, there were also contributors who gave the bank some Knocks.
