The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has revealed that building more correction centers should not be a priority of the Nigerian government.
He added that a reorientation of the system should take more precedence.
Tunji-Ojo stated this during an interview, adding that correction centers should be a last resort.
According to him, rehabilitation and reorientation should take priority, while incarceration should be a last option.
He stated that his ministry had realized this and is in the process of correcting the anomaly, adding that such changes could not be made in isolation, as the ministry would have to work with the Ministry of Justice, the police and other law enforcement agencies.
Ojo who noted that there were inherited challenges in his ministry, added that he is trying to ensure the problems are eradicated in accordance with the world best practices.
