Suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State.
Emefiele, was granted bail in the sum of N20 million, with one surety.
In a ruling on Tuesday, Nicholas Oweibo, the presiding judge, said the charges against Emefiele are bailable.
Emefiele had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge bordering on alleged illegal possession of firearms preferred against him.
Recall that the Department of State Service (DSS), had arrested Emefiele after he was suspended by president Bola Timubu.
The DSS through it’s spokesperson, Peter Afunanya confirmed the arrest of Emefiele in a statement on his Twitter handle.
“The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons,” Afunanya tweeted.
The DSS subsequently announced it had charged Emefiele, to court. It’s announcement followed an order by Justice Hamza Muazu of an Abuja High Court on Thursday, July 13, 2023 that the secret police charge Emefiele to court within one week or release him.
The DSS spokesman, however, did not state the court where Emefiele was charged and did not state the allegations brought against him.
“The public may recall that the Service had, in 2022, applied for a Court Order to detain him in respect of a criminal investigation,” Afunanya said in a statement.
“Though he (Emefiele) obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court, the Service, however, arrested him in June, 2023, on the strength of suspected fresh criminal infractions/information, one of which forms the basis for his current prosecution.”
The secret police assured the public of professionalism, justice and fairness in handling Emefiele’s case.
Emefiele’s travail started after he was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
