Dangote Refinery, the world’s largest single-train refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has officially launched the production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, confirmed the rollout at a press conference held at the refinery in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. He was joined by Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited (DIL), and Hajiya Fatima Aliko-Dangote, Group Commercial Operations Director at DIL.

Dangote hailed the milestone as transformative for Nigeria, marking the end of years of fuel importation. He emphasized that the refinery’s achievement would boost the industrial and manufacturing sectors by significantly reducing fuel imports. This reduction is expected to save foreign exchange, stabilize the naira, lower inflation, and decrease the cost of living.

“Today is a historic occasion for Nigeria. We have not produced petrol domestically for many years, and I extend my gratitude to the Nigerian people and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for fostering an environment conducive to this monumental achievement,” Dangote said. “This development will drive our nation’s growth, development, and prosperity.”

Dangote also praised President Tinubu’s initiatives, including ‘Naira for Crude’ and ‘Naira for Products.’ “These measures will stabilize the naira by reducing the demand for dollars by 40%, which will help stabilize the exchange rate,” he added.

He highlighted the refinery’s role in combating fuel importation issues, such as ’round-tripping’—where fuel is documented but never enters Nigeria. The new facility will enable precise tracking of fuel consumption, including monitoring loaded trucks and ships.

“We are here today to celebrate and thank God Almighty for this achievement,” Dangote continued. “Many doubted our ability to reach this point, but we have succeeded.”

He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and his administration for their support, noting that the refinery would not only transform Nigeria but also serve the broader Sub-Saharan Africa region.

“The petrol we are producing is of the highest quality, comparable to any premium standard globally, including those in Europe and America. This is a significant milestone for Nigeria,” Dangote said, adding that starting in October, the petrochemical plant will fully meet local demands, eliminating the need to import polypropylene.
