Nigerians have expressed difficulty in believing a statement credited to the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate.

Prof. Pate was quoted to have stated that Nigeria’s health sector has greatly improved so much so that it is now attracting patients not just from the West African subregion but also from countries as far as the United States and the United Kingdom.

The Coordinating Minister disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council, (FEC), meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, February 4.

“People are now beginning to come from the subregion, and even from faraway places like the UK and the US, to receive quality healthcare in Nigeria.

“Despite the challenges we face, significant progress is being made, and the transformation promised by President Tinubu is already taking shape,” Pate had said.

However, Nigerians who have reacted to the statement have questioned the possibility of the Professors position, with many asking why do government officials including President Bola Tinubu still travel abroad for medical treatment.

In his reaction to Prof. Pate, Seun Woods said, “I doubt it. Why do Tinubu and others still receive medical treatment overseas if the hospitals are what the guy claims it is?”

Also, Uche Godson wondered why government officials still go abroad for treatment if the statement is true.

“But you all are going for treatment and check up there,” he noted.

On his part, Abdulrazak Atiku said: “Prof Pate inform me about it once Bola Tinubu abandoned France/UK for these Nigeria hospitals that avoided mentioning its names . My vote is for UNA when that happens.”

Charles Nwogu stated thus, “With what equipments do you provide quality health care? Why are politicians always senseless in their lies?”

In April 2024, Prof. Pate was quoted to have said that between 15,000 and 16,000 doctors have departed the country in the past five years.

According to him, Africa’s most populous country has just 55,000 doctors for a population of 220 million.
