Ahead of the Edo State gubernatorial election on Saturday, September 19, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has ordered the restriction of vehicular movement within the state.
Following the order by IGP Adamu, the restriction would commence from 11.59 pm on Friday, September 18, to 6pm on Saturday, September 19.
According to the police chief, the restriction is in order to checkmate the movement of political thugs.
A statement issued by the police spokesperson, Frank Mba via Twitter, on Thursday, September 17, said that the restriction order was enforced to check the movement of political thugs and other criminally-minded people from disrupting the electoral processes.
Assuring Edo citizens of their safety, the police urged them to come out and vote on election day, assuring them of adequate protection.
“While regretting any inconveniences the restriction order may cause the citizens, the IGP enjoins the citizens to see the restriction as part of necessary sacrifices towards the enthronement of democracy,” the statement from the police read.
However, Mba warned that the police would take action against people engaged in any criminal activities such as electoral malpractice, hate speeches, and others.
