Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, might have dared President Mohammadu Buhari in the ongoing Edo State House of Assembly saga.
In a meeting to resolve the ongoing impass, Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, had told stakeholders present that “President Buhari wanted Governor Obaseki to issue fresh proclamation for re-inauguration of House of Assembly, and anybody interested in the Speaker position should contest it.”
The president’s directive has now been rubbished by Governor Obaseki who has declared it as being false.
Governor Obaseki who noted that Buhari believes in democracy, said he had inaugurated the House in accordance with the dictates of the constitution, and thus will not be issuing a fresh proclamation letter for the inauguration of the state’s House of Assembly.
Defending his position, stated that the Nigerian constitution mandated state governors to issue proclamation only once for the inauguration of the individual legislatures.
While reacting to the claim by a national daily that President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered a fresh proclamation for the House of Assembly, he said he had dutifully performed this function as granted by the constitution.
The governor who spoke through Crusoe Osagie, his media aide, said the story was on the new proclamation letter was not true.
“We wish to state categorically that the story is false as there is no presidential directive to the Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, to issue a fresh proclamation.
“President Muhammadu Buhari that we know is a law-abiding leader who will not issue directives that contradict the provisions of the Nigerian constitution,” he said.
The governor and the APC National Chairman recently met at the Presidential Policy Retreat at the Council chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja and exchange pleasantries, with insinuation that the duo might have made peace.
Recall that Governor Obaseki and the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, have been at loggerheads in recent times.
