At least five people were killed in a gunfight between men of the Nigerian Army and Boko Haram insurgents on Friday evening, January 17.
Report emerging revealed that a soldier and four members of the Boko Haram insurgent were killed when the insurgents attacked a military checkpoint near Firgi in the Bama local government area of Borno State.
A source said the troops were able to repel the attack by the insurgents and the dead soldier was on Saturday, January 18, brought to 7 Division Hospital in Maiduguri where the injured troops were also being treated.
“They (the insurgents) came around 8pm and were firing RPG and anti-aircraft guns. There was pandemonium everywhere, troops helped evacuate the hub staff to their base,” an aid worker narrated.
Gunmen reportedly kill 35 in Kaduna, demand N100m ransom for 58 victims abducted in 10 communities. The source said the troops were able to repel the attack from the insurgents. The aid worker stated that the Boko Haram fighters destroyed five cars and looted stores, carted away foodstuff and other valuables during the attack.
