Uruguay’s legend, Diego Forlan, was at his best on his 100th cap for the South American champions as they clipped the wings of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the wee hours of Friday at the ongoing Confederation Cup in Brazil.
A classy combination of Lius Suarez and Diego Forlan ripped Nigeria’s defence apart in the 51st minute of the encounter as they lost 1-2 to the Uruguayans.
The Stephen Keshi-tutored boys will now have to fight gamely in the last group tie with Spain on Sunday and hope that Uruguay will not score up to six goals against the group’s punching bag, Tahiti.
However, the unbeaten run of the Super Eagles in a competitive game has also ended with a loss to another South American team.
In spite of the 1-2 loss, Nigeria is still ahead of Uruguay on the Group B log.
It would have been a better day for Nigeria if their entertaining and intelligent football had resulted in a win.
Great thanks to Mikel Obi, whose game is becoming more and more mature with every passing day.
Obi’s rocket of a shot, hitting the roof of the Uruguayan net, put Nigeria at 1-1.
It may just be the best goal of the tournament.
It was his fourth ever for Nigeria since his debut in 2006.
The architect was Brown Ideye, who played the ball into the path of Obi.
The Chelsea midfielder lobbed the ball over an advancing Ferando Muslera, the keeper and skipper of Uruguay.
The stadium erupted into spontaneous roar to salute the beauty of a goal.
It was a wonderful moment for Obi, who has endeared himself to fans.
It cancelled an earlier goal by Diego Lugano in the 19th minute.
Forlan was adjudged the man of the match of their 2-1 win over the Super Eagles.
Forlan, who made his 100th appearance for Uruguay, struck in the second half to beat the African Champions by 2-1.
The goal makes him his country’s all-time leading scorer.
Forlan held the record of being his country’s highest goal scorer by himself for quite a while but Luis Suarez tied him with his goal against Spain.
The two might remain in a competition to be the country’s all-time goal leader for a bit, though it seems likely Suarez will pull away eventually.
