Fresh Hurdle For Obaseki As Court Restrains Governor From PDP Primary

At a time when many thought that he had scaled the challenges rocking the boat of his second term in office and would now contest under the flagship of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), an aspirant in the forthcoming PDP governorship primary election, Hon. Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, has brought a new dimension to things.

On Monday, June 21, Hon. Ogbeide-Ihama, secured a court order restraining the governor from participating in the election.

A sitting member representing Oredo Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives, Ogbeide-Ihama filed the suit at a Federal High sitting in Port Harcourt.

According to his statement of claim, Obaseki who recently decamped to the party was not part of the candidates screened by the PDP National Working Committee before the date on the timetable lapsed, he thus should not be allowed to participate in the primary election.

The court also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the embattled governor.

Meanwhile, a group named the Edo Youths and Women United, has withdrawn its support for Governor Obaseki.

While apologising to the people of the state and the members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), for the error of judgment in picking the ADC governorship form for Obaseki., the group maintained that governor betrayed them.

In a statement, it accused the governor of betraying the trust of members, saying it had withdrawn its support for him.

“It was to stop the corruption, impudence and cruel godfatherism that has persisted in Edo politics that we the Edo youths and women United decided to procure the ADC Governorship form for Governor Obaseki. But we are disappointed by the decision of the governor to continue the godfather politics, ” the statement read in part.
