There have been varying reactions since the release of the 2016/2017 Headies nomination list.
As expected, it is not without questions, but generally, music pundits seem satisfied with this year’s nominations.
The major categories have familiar industry names including Olamide, Wizkid, Simi, Falz, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Omawunmi and several others.
‘Best Pop Single’ category has songs such as ‘Mad Over You’ by Runtown, ‘All Over’ by Tiwa Savage, ‘Yeba’ by Kiss Daniel, ‘Iskaba’ by Wande Coal and DJ Tunez, ‘If’ and ‘Fia’ by Davido.
‘Producer of the Year’ category has beat makers such as Kidominant for his work in both ‘Fall’ and ‘Mama’; Spellz for working on the singles ‘Iskaba’ and ‘Malo’; Tekno for producing ‘If’ and ‘Rara’; Sarz for his work on ‘Maradona’ and ‘Come Closer’ and Masterkraft for producing ‘Yawa’, ‘Virtuous Woman’.
Nominees for ‘Best R&B/Pop Album’ are Wizkid for ‘Sounds From The Other Side’; Omawunmi for the album ‘Timeless’; Simi for her debut body of work titled ‘Simisola’; Adekunle Gold for ‘Gold’ Flavor with ‘Ijele The Traveler’ and Niniola for ‘This Is Me’.
Perhaps one of the most competitive categories, ‘Best Street-Hop Artiste’ has acts such as Small Doctor for his song ‘Penalty’; Olamide for ‘Wo’; CDQ for ‘Sai Baba’; Idowest in the song ‘Shepeteri’; Skuki ‘Pass The Agbara’ and Mr. Real for his song ‘Legbegbe’.
Davido; Wizkid; Olamide; Simi; Tiwa Savage makeup artistes in the Artiste Of The Year category, while Song Of The Year has ‘Penalty’ by Small Doctor; ‘Wo’ by Olamide ‘If’ by Davido; ‘Yeba’ by Kiss Daniel; ‘Mad Over You’ by Runtown and ‘Fia’ by Davido.
However, conspicuously missing in the categories are artistes such as YBNL’s Temmie Ovwasa who has credit for songs such as ‘Afefe’ and ‘Jabole’, both songs released in the year in review.
Aside this, why Junior Boy made ‘Rookie of the Year’ and not ‘Next Rated’ has also been questioned. After all, Reekado Banks won Next Rated without an album.
