Shank became a brand in the music industry when he dropped his hit song, Julie. Subsequently, he faded of the radar. In this interview with our REPORTER he talks about what he has been up to and the new kid on the block Patoranking.
You have been silent for a while, is this because you parted ways with your former label?
I have been working and my new album will be out soon. The album is almost done. We’re at the final lap which is choosing the songs which will be on the album.
How smooth was your transition from your label to been an independent artiste?
There was a bit of turbulence, but with time I have been lucky.

Tell us about plans to re-launch your music career
I recently signed a management deal and I am hopeful about it.
Reggae music has not been really rewarding, was this also why you went underground?
The genre of music which I do is what I’m used to. It is also what I know.
How did you find yourself in the genre?
My reggae influence dates back to the 80s. I came from a generation when reggae was the in thing. I can make other secular music, but I’m a reggae head.
How do you feel that Patoranking is the new kid on the reggae block?
I feel happy that finally, there is a platform for reggae artistes to be seen. There is no envy at all. I have had my moment in the spotlight and when I was on top of my game during the Julie era, there was no one else around to contend with me.
What is your take on dancehall now?
Dancehall music has become a movement. I don’t see it as if only one person is spearheading the reggae movement. I like the fact that anybody that sings dancehall music would be listened to now. It is not about me or Patoranking it is but it is about the music. I can never be jealous of Patoranking or any new kid on the block.
Why is it that artistes are always eager to move on after they have been made by a label?
It depends on the artistes involved. I parted ways with my label for my own reasons.
What were those reasons?
We fell out.
What caused the falling out; did it have to do with money?
Money was involved. Blame sharing was also involved.
Tell us about the woman in your life, who is she?
I don’t need the distraction of a relationship at the moment. A relationship requires time and effort which I would rather put into my music.

Having baby-mama is the in thing in the industry, do you have any?
I don’t have any. At least, I don’t know of any. I have been careful.
Some artistes have been quoted as saying they have no plan to marry, are you in that category?
Soon, it can even be tomorrow. God knows best I don’t have the chart of my life on my palms.
Who are the major artistes to expect in this album?
Expect to hear collaborations with artistes such as Davido and Wizkid. I also had one with Olamide.
What is your take on artistes been blunt?
When you speak your mind, you upset a lot of people. Fela; was not the most adored fellow during his time but he spoke his mind.
2009 was the peak of your career, today you are trying to re-launch it, do you have any regret?
I made a lot of friends I would have avoided. I have also been rude to some people. That is one of the regrets I have had.
