Audu Maikori, Group President of Chocolate City, has been awarded N40 Million in compensation by an Abuja High Court following his illegal arrest and detention by the Kaduna State Governor Nasiru el-Rufai.
Maikori was arrested and detained in February for tweeting inciting tweets and pictures about an alleged case of murder by Fulani herdsmen in Kaduna.
Despite subsequently apologizing having realized that the information supplied to him were false, Maikori was still arrested and detained by the Police on the orders of Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai.
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today Friday, October 27, however declared the arrest and detention as unlawful and awarded a 40 million Naira compensation to Maikori.
Delivering judgment today, Justice John Tsoho insisted that Maikori’s arrest in Lagos was unlawful and ordered the respondents to the suit: Governor el-Rufai, Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police and the Attorney-General of Kaduna State to pay the damages. Further, he also directed that they add the sum of N1,430 as the cost of instituting the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by Maikori in May 2017.
The Judge however ruled that the police could arrest suspects for allegedly violating the law and order on the cyberspace, and his judgment was not meant to interfere with the ongoing trial of Makori in Kaduna.
