The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ibrahim Tukur, the People Democratic Party (PDP) candidate winner of the Bakura constituency by-election in Zamfara State.
Tukur was declared the winner on Wednesday, December 9, four days after the election was conducted.
Recall that the election conducted on Saturday, December 5, was declared inconclusive by INEC after cancelling the results of 14 polling units in Bakura ward.
The electoral body subsequently announced December 9 as the date for the supplementary election.
According to the INEC’s returning officer for the suplementary election, Professor Tanko Yahaya, the PDP candidate polled 23,874 polls to defeat his close challenger, Bello Dankande, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who scored 16,546 votes.
The APC had earlier announced that it would not participate in the supplementary election. The chairman of the APC publicity committee in Zamfara, Ibrahim Birnin-Magaji, made the announcement on Tuesday, December 8, a day before the election was conducted. He explained that the party took the decision to withdraw to enable INEC to complete the process.
However, reacting to the position of the APC, the Zamfara state chapter of the PDP said it is not surprised by the decision of the APC.
In a statement, the PDP chairman in the state, Tukur Danfulani, said his party was delighted that the APC did not accuse them of any wrongdoing in the expression of good sportsmanship in politics.
