A new Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), has been appointed for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Chukwuemeka Chukwu was appointed and confirmed by the Senate on Tuesday, October 13.
The decision of the Senate came after due consideration of the report submitted by its committee on INEC, led by Senator Kabiru Gaya.
The Senator Guya-led report noted that Chukwu possesses the needed qualifications for the job and that his nomination had not been opposed by anyone.
Congratulating the new REC, Senate President, Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, commended the new REC for getting the rare opportunity to serve his nation in this capacity.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to the controversial nomination of Lauretta Onochie as commissioner of INEC.
Speaking through its national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the opposition party said it rejected the nomination of Onochie who was described as a “card-carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Recall that President Buhari had nominated Onochie for screening and confirmation as a national commissioner of INEC, representing Delta state.
