The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has stated that it is not under any pressure to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uguaghan.
Speaking in a recent interview, Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to INEC’s Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, clarified that the commission was not under any external or political pressure to expedite the recall process.
Oyekanmi assured that INEC would continue to follow the rules and make every process transparent.
“Every level, every process will be open to people to scrutinize. And if we go to the verification stage, the people, the civil society, the media, observers will be allowed to observe the process. So we are not under any pressure at all,”he said.
Recall that registered electorates in Kogi Central filed a recall petition against the lawmaker and sent same to INEC.
Though the electoral umpire initially rejected the petition for not having certain information regarding it’s promoters, INEC subsequently confirmed that the details lacking had been since submitted with the petition accepted.
INEC further revealed that it had gone ahead to notify Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan of the petition against her.
Akpoti-Uguaghan’s issues started after she face-off with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio over the reallocation of her seat. The lawmaker who later accused Akpabio of sexual harassment has since been suspended for six months.
