Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has been ordered by the Senate to issue a fresh proclamation for the inauguration of the state’s House of Assembly.
According to the Senate, the governor has a week to issue the proclamation.
Obaseki was mandated in an order issued on Tuesday, July 30, hours after he rubbished a presidential directive delivered by the Kaduna State governor Nasiru El-Rufai during a reconciliation meeting.
In a statement by his spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, the Governor said that the 1999 constitution allows governors to issue proclamation only once for the inauguration of their houses of assembly which he has done.
The new order came after the presentation of the report of the ad-hoc committee by the chairman, Senator Sabi Abdullahi.
According to the Senate, it would not hesitate to take over the functions of Edo Assembly in line with constitutional provisions if the governor fails to issue fresh proclamation during the stipulated period.
