The chairman of the Rivers State chapter of Labour Party (LP), Hilda Dokubo has been suspended by the party.

Dokubo was suspended at the party’s ward in Asari Toru local government area of Rivers State.

NAN reports that the suspension followed an emergency meeting of the party’s ward executive committee on July 15.

The former actress faces allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and violating party regulations, among others.

A letter signed by ward chairman Ajalamonia Ibama, secretary Lole Amacheer, and treasurer Emmanuel Ibama confirmed her suspension, addressed to the LP chairman of Asari Toru.

Others who signed the letter are Osaki Dieypiriye, the women leader, and Osaki Dokubo, the publicity secretary.

The ward executives said the decision was made following a thorough investigation into the allegations against the 54-year-old actress.

They argued that substantial evidence had been uncovered to support their claims.

Dokubo made her Nollywood debut during her youth service in a 1992 film titled ‘Evil Passion’.

She has since been featured in several other films including ‘Gone Forever’, ‘End of the Wicked’, and ‘My Goodwill’.

Dokubo won the ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ and the ‘Best Actress in a Comedy’ categories at the 11th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

In 2022, she declared interest in contesting the Asalga/Akulga federal constituency in the house of representatives under the Labour Party.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, revealed that Organised Labour turned down a proposal by President Bola Tinubu to implement a ₦250,000 minimum wage, conditional on increasing petrol prices.

Ajaero, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Thursday, explained that accepting the current ₦70,000 minimum wage was a strategic decision to shield Nigerians from additional hardship.

This statement came shortly after Labour leaders met with the President in Abuja to discuss the matter.

“At last week’s meeting, the President brought a proposal that ‘I will give you guys ₦250,000’ if you allow me to equally increase the pump price of petroleum products’ and we said, ‘No, we need to go and consult’.

“Today, we went there to tell him, ‘No’. The labour movement can make sacrifices without allowing Nigerians to suffer further on the increase in the pump price of petroleum products.”

The pump price of petrol jumped from ₦184 in May 2023 when Tinubu declared that “subsidy is gone” to about ₦700 at the moment, depending on the part of the country.

Ajaero also said the Organised Labour agreed to ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage for Nigerian workers because the wage reviews in the country will no longer be every five years but once in three years.

President Tinubu is expected to send an executive bill to the National Assembly on the agreed rate for onward legislation.

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced the discontinuation of surface dressing on the country’s roads, citing it as a major contributor to their rapid deterioration.

According to Umahi, surface dressing allows water to penetrate the asphalt within just two months of completion, leading to premature failure.

He made this announcement during the 29th National Council on Works meeting in Abakaliki, themed “Unlocking Infrastructural Potentials and Opportunities for Sustainable Development.”

Umahi also expressed gratitude to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, for hosting the gathering of 36 commissioners and permanent secretaries from the Ministry of Works.

The move aims to improve the durability and quality of Nigeria’s roads.

He said that the Ministry has equally banned the evaluation of variation of price of materials.

The minister described high cost of projects as a major factor working against the improvement of infrastructure in the country.

While faulting project delays, he admonished contractors to be diligent in improving road infrastructure and added that the time is ripe for the engineers to do things differently.

Responding, the Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru said the government has completed 700-kilometres of roads across the state.
