All eyes are on the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, RT Hon. Mudashiru Obasa to see if he would honor the All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership’s resolution or attempt to hold onto power.
Following the leadership crisis that had been rocking the Assembly after Obasa’s impeachment on January 13, and the election of his deputy Mojisola Meranda as the first female Speaker, the leadership of the APC in a high-powered meeting decided that Obasa’s impeachment was illegal.
The high-powered committee led by Chief Bisi Akande had other key members including former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, former APC National Vice Chairman (South-West) Chief Pius Akinyelure, and other prominent figures in attendance.
Resolution taken at the meeting included Meranda’s resignation as Speaker and Obasa’s reinstallment as Speaker.
Indeed, as directed, Meranda resigned her appointment while Obasa returned as the Speaker of the House.
With the crisis thought to have been settled, a new twist emerged with the Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi quoted to have said that Obasa would also resign as Speaker with a new person from Lagos West constituency to be named as Speaker today Wednesday.
“Mojisola Meranda is to resign by tomorrow (Monday).
“Mudashiru Obasa is to return and resign as well.
“Both resignation letters must reach the GAC by Wednesday. The GAC will announce a new Speaker from Lagos West on Wednesday, the GAC chairman was quoted to have said.
“This issue will be resolved very soon. Disputes and differences are part of life, but we have established ways to settle them within the party,” Olusi assured.
Amidst all of these is the speculation making the rounds that Obasa might not resign his appointment as Speaker.
The speculation is hinges on the Speaker’s popular political survival strategy and tactics, leveraging on his relationship with party leaders.
With the current developments, all eyes are on Obasa to see if he will honor the APC leadership’s resolution or attempt to hold onto power.
