Meet UK’s New Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak has emerged as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK).

He takes over the reigns of power from Liz Truss, who resigned from office after just 45 days.

Sunak, who is also the country’s first leader of colour, made a bold return to lead the ruling Tories barely weeks after losing to Truss.

His victory follows the withdrawal of ex-Prime Minister, Boris Johnson on Sunday, in what had been termed an audacious attempt at returning to 10 Downing Street.

Johnson who was Prime Minister before Truss, withdrew from the contest before officially declaring his ambition to contest, citing a divided party as his excuse.

Candidates were required to secure the support of at least 100 Conservative MPs by 2:00 pm (1300 GMT) on Monday to be able to contest as the next Prime Minister, however, Sunak met that requirement as early as Friday night, declaring his candidacy on Sunday and amassing nearly 150 public nominations from Tory lawmakers.

Sunak’s only opponent following Johnson’s withdrawal was cabinet member, Penny Mordaunt who also withdrew from contesting against Sunak in the last  minute.

Britain continues to grapples with multiple crises, compounded by the disastrous market response to Tross’s tax-slashing mini-budget.
