I started attracting male attention at age 13 -Nina David

Nina David is a songstress who has successfully explored the modeling and acting industry. Now into music, she spoke with The Octopus, on her musical career, why she dumped acting, modeling and what makes her unique.

Your name has popped up in different sects of the entertainment industry, what really are you up to?

Well, I am a career lady. I really don’t have other sides to me than the business side. My life; has been all about work and more work. I am an easy going person who has been exploring the entertainment industry and finally I have found my passion, which is music.

What inspired your passion for music?

Music has always been something that I had always wanted to do from way back. I loved music from when I was small, at about seven years, I was already thinking of doing music. Tony Braxton; inspired me a lot. I was highly inspired watching her on television and you know what they say about dreams never dying.

Your profile has been on the rise of recent, what have you been up to?

I have been working really hard. For you to understand what I have been doing I will give you a run down. I started music professionally in 2008, releasing two singles one of which is ‘Sugar Daddy’. I later shot the video in 2010. The song did well and motivated me to do another song. Last year, I dropped another single titled ‘Player’ and it also did well in the streets, clubs and at parties. The song had the names of top Nigerian footballers like Joseph Yobo, Obafemi Martins, Osaze Odewengi and Mikel Obi in it, and it was actually received positively. The names of the footballers really hyped the song because of the passion Nigerians have for the game. Presently, I am out with another single which I released on the last day of the year 2012, and it is titled ‘Owu milori’. I featured Macawz in the song and we actually shot the video in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is really doing exceptionally well in the music industry, much more than I actually anticipated. It was produced by Tudasky, while the video was shot by Godfather.

The song ‘player’ raised a lot of eye brows, was it motivated by your personal experience?

For me, it was just about the music and entertaining my fans. I remember a lot of people were trying to twist it by saying I was singing about myself, or maybe I got played or even maybe I had played someone and I was using the experience to sing. All sorts were said. Some people even said I was dating some of the players in the Super Eagles and that was why I mentioned their names in the song. I believe in a good song and when I am composing, whatever comes to me I just sing it. It is basically music and entertainment

So you are saying you did not play anybody and was not exploited by anyone?

No. I was just singing and nobody got played.

A strings of singles to your credit, when is the album dropping?

It would drop this year, but I still have a lot of work to do on it.

For one who has excelled as an international model, how do does it feel trying to be a successful musician?

I don’t believe in giving up, I don’t accept impossibilities. If I want something, I don’t stop till I get it, despite all the challenges. Nothing really comes easy in life. It has not been an easy road for me, but we thank God; I am not where I was before. I am several steps ahead.

How desperate are you to succeed as a musician?

I know I am really ambitious, but as a proud person and a lady who has got her pride there are some levels I can’t cross to be successful. I can’t kill to succeed, I won’t sleep with any man to succeed, but I still try to get what I want somehow.

You were a fast rising actress, but suddenly you dumped acting, what happened?

My acting career was one in which a lot of people took interest in, but the problem was that I was not really that into it. I was not serious about it. It lasted while it did and I churned out some good movies with top producers. I did Mission to nowhere produced by Teco Benson, True Love by Saint Obi and another one produced by Ebi Edozie. Several others also followed, but the problem was that I was just doing the movie, but I really was not finding it interesting.

You also played with modeling for a while, and moved on, are you a lady who does not stay long on a profession?

My life started off as a model, but that job was not something I saw as a career. It just happened, it just came naturally. For me, modeling is inside and I don’t work too hard to achieve anything. I have been able to do quite a lot for myself I must say. It is not that I am jumping from one industry to another because I was trying to find my passion, but now, I have found something I really love in music and I want to concentrate hundred percent on it. I believe I have done my time in modeling. That I chose to retire does not mean that if I find a good deal I won’t do it. I like to be very focus on whatever I want to do, just the same way I left acting to focus on modeling, I feel I have done my time in modeling and I want to focus on my musical career. I have reached my destination and if there is anything that will be taking me around the world like I used to do in my days as a model it has to be music. I don’t want what happened when I shot my first video to happen again because then I had to travel for a modeling job in Milan, Italy and it did not help my career, as a musician. In fact, my career as a musician suffered.

What was the experience like been the face of Delta Soap?

It was interesting because it was the kind of job any beautiful girl in Nigeria would want to do. It was a big plus for me at that time.

A lot of insinuations have been made as to how young ladies get to emerge winners of beauty pageants, what sacrifice did you make to emerge face of Delta Soap?

I did not have to make any sacrifice. For me, it was all about my talent as a model. It was however a big one for me and it made my career.

Beside music what do you do?

I run a beauty salon at Ikota Shopping Mall, Victoria Garden City, Lagos. The business is in its second year. I just have this business mentality that you need make money. I sell bags, hair, beauty accessories and all sorts.

For a young lady, a lot of people would wonder where the finance for the business came from?

I told you earlier that I started as a model and ended up as a well-paid model. We have levels in modeling, but I was a well-paid model. So, I guess you know where I am coming from.

What was growing up like?

Growing up was beautiful. I have so many good memories of growing up. I started getting attention from men at a young age because I was always looking older than I really was. I started catching men stealing glances at me at the age of 13 years because then I looked like a 16 year old girl. It used to bother me then, but now, I am used to them.

Are you in a relationship presently?

I don’t discuss my private life in the media.

What would your ideal man look like?

He has to have the fear of God, has to be down to earth and he would have to know how to control me.

You seem to have two personalities, am I right?

Yes, that is true. I have one personality as the homely lady who wears her jean, comfortable shirts and her slipper, while the other one is wild and always wants to be on point, crazy and all showbiz. But they both are one person if you look close enough.

What is the sexiest part of your body?

That would be my legs, I have legs to die for and they really helped me as a model. I have other sexy parts of my body, but my eyes, lips and legs are the ones that you can see easily.

One would have expected you to say your breast?

No, not my breast. My height and my hips also attract a lot of attentions too.
