Justice is near for the families of Segun Sholaja and Ogheneove Ebobo who were killed by four police officers in Iba area of Lagos State.
In a viral video, police officers identified as Inspector Fabiyi Omomayara, Sergent Olaniyi Solomon, Sargent Solomon Sunday and Constable Aliyu Mukaila were seen the duo tagged criminals by the police.
Having been dismissed from the state police command for going against the ethics of the profession, the officers were released from prison after the state Directorate of Public Prosecution ordered their release.
According to the DPP, the officers had no case to answer as there was no sufficient facts to pursue a case of murder or involuntary manslaughter against the officers.
Reacting to the position of the DPP, families of the duo petitioned the Lagos State government.
A statement issued by the state government said that sequel to a petition received from the families of the victims alleging extra judicial killing of the deceased persons by the four police officers, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN has directed the immediate investigation and review of the case.
The statement further said that the Lagos state government commenced plans to bring to justice the four police officers.
“In the course of investigation initiated by the Office of the Attorney General/ Commissioner for Justice, fresh evidence came to light indicting the concerned police officers.
“This has necessitated a review of the earlier legal opinion issued, and the Attorney General/ Commissioner for Justice has directed that the suspects be charged for the killing of the deceased persons.
“The Attorney General/ Commissioner for Justice assures the general public of the resolve of his office to uphold the Rule of Law in the State,” the statement said.
