In a significant step toward environmental sustainability, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (First E&P) Joint Venture (JV) have successfully reduced routine flaring of associated gas (AG) by 96 Per cent at the Anyala (OML 83) and Madu (OML 85) fields.
This remarkable achievement underscores Nigeria’s commitment to mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. As part of its climate action goals, the country aims to cut emissions by 20 per cent unconditionally and 47 per cent conditionally.
According to an official statement from NNPCL, this milestone was realized through the strategic reinjection of associated gas into a designated underground storage reservoir at the Madu field, located in OML 85, offshore Bayelsa State. By redirecting gas that would otherwise be flared, the initiative significantly curtails environmental impact while optimizing resource utilization.
The development aligns with the regulatory framework of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), reaffirming the JV’s commitment to national environmental policies and global best practices in sustainable energy production.
NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, hailed the achievement, stating: “This milestone underscores our unwavering commitment to responsible resource management and optimizing production to meet energy demands while advancing sustainability goals. It reflects our dedication to global environmental standards and best practices.”
Similarly, Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, Managing Director and CEO of First E&P, emphasized the significance of the accomplishment:
“This achievement demonstrates our relentless commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible energy production. By substantially reducing our carbon footprint, we are fostering a sustainable energy future that benefits both the environment and the communities we serve.”
The JV remains focused on commercializing stored gas and harnessing other stranded gas resources within the Niger Delta, reinforcing its dedication to a more sustainable and energy-efficient future.
