A group identified as the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), is drumming support for an Igbo president in 2023.
According to the northern elders, the southeast zone should be next for Nigeria’s 2023 presidency and not any other geopolitical region.
This position was made known in a statement by their National Coordinator, Engr. Zana Goni and Hajia Mario Bichi, the national women leader.
The group stressed that Nigeria’s next president should be Igbo and recommended that the culture of the rotational presidency continue between the northern and southern region.
According to the northern elders, the rotation has helped to douse the political tension in Nigeria. Noting that their position was borne out of the need for all parts of Nigeria to be fairly treated in the nation’s political affairs, the northern elders said the Igbos have been marginalized in the scheme of things.
They also called on both the All Progressives Congress, (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), to field candidates of southeast extraction, urging northern elders from other zones in the country to back the Igbos in their long quest to produce a president.
