Lekan Akande, first son of famous Fuji musician, Alhaji Abass Akande popularly known as Obesere, has floated a new record label called R-Entertainment.

According to the Dublin based young music promoter, the birth of R-Entertainment is to redefine the Nigerian music industry and set the pace for others.

Speaking at the unveiling of the label  recently in Ikeja, Lagos, Lekan stated that having understudied the Nigerian hip-hop music industry for the last three years and having done a couple of projects underground for top Nigerian artistes in Dublin, he said his team is ready to add the needed value to the industry and place it more appropriately on the international map.

“I started R-Entertainment three years ago. It is about promoting music in Africa. I have been collaborating with top promoters in Dublin. I was part of the team that brought Wizkid, Davido and others from Nigeria. I just felt it is about time I come back home to add value to what we have now. We are not going to copy anyone; we have our own standard and master plan that will change the face of the industry for good.”

Against this backdrop, he has signed on two eclectic artistes; one an indigenous rap artiste, Abiodun Azeez, a.k.a. Beezy and Afro-pop sensation, Akinyemi Akintoye, known as Sajan. The two artistes are billed to hit the airwaves this week with their new promotional singles entitled Pawon and Soyoyo respectively.

While Sajan’s Soyoyo musical video had been shot in Dublin, the label is making plans for the visuals of Pawon.

Assessing the Nigerian music industry, Beezy believes that Nigerian artistes need to work on themselves and their music in other to catch up with their counterparts in Europe.

“There’s lot more we Nigerian artistes, most especially the rappers need to do. We need to start thinking about the international market. Kudos to Ice Prince and a few others, but look at Sarkodie! Though he is a Ghanaian, he is much respected outside Africa based on his style and branding. That is my vision. And I think Nigerian artistes need to start looking into that direction.”

Meanwhile, reacting to his father’s popularity as his yardstick to succeed in the music industry, the record label boss claimed that he is set out to carve his own niche.

“My father has done his beat; it’s now time for me to shine. I want to carve my own niche. I love doing things on my own. I love being challenged.”
