Reports that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in the ongoing Ondo State gubernatorial election were attacked and material stolen has been refuted.
The Octopus News can reveal that what happened was an accident, a boat mishap, and not an attack on officials of INEC.
In the early hours of the election, there had been viral reports that INEC officials were attacked in Ilaje Local Government with election materials stolen.
However, speaking during an interview, Ibiyemi Igbolagbade, Electoral Officer, Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State stated that what happened was a boat mishap which didn’t affect either the officials of the commission or their working materials.
Further, Igbalode revealed that there was no loss of lives and that all election materials were salvaged. According to him, the materials had been properly packed making the float in the river, thus water could not penetrate them.
He also revealed that the polling unit that the materials were meant for was one of the first to kick off voting in the gubernatorial election in the state.
