The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has sent a message of peace to the candidates of the Ondo State gubernatorial election.
Sultan Abubakar called on political parties who have candidates contesting the Saturday, October 10, election to uphold peace during the poll.
Speaking during the signing of the peace accord by the candidates, an event put together by the National Peace Committee (NPC), the monarch stated that if service is the goal of the politicians, then the coming election should not be a do or die affair.
The Sultan urged parties to see the peace accord not just a requirement for the poll but more importantly, a covenant to save lives during and even after the exercise.
He also spoke to supporters of the parties who often become agents of violence during campaign rallies and voting at various polling units, urging them to be peaceful during the elections.
He said: “In fact, see it as a covenant which you all would be responsible for the outcome at the end of the day. Let all of us obey the rules of the game.
“There can only be one winner and that winner has already be ordained by Almighty God before the vote is even cast. We don’t know the person yet.
“So, as contestants tell the citizens of Ondo State what you can’t do and what you will do for them. Their votes must count as INEC has assured us that every vote must count.”
