Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu has resigned.

Ayu’s resignation follows his suspension for anti-party activities by the Executive Committee of the party in Igyorov Ward of Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to a statement by the party, Ayu worked against the success of the party in Igyorov Council Ward level, while he also failed to pay his Annual Subscription Fees as provided under Section 8 (9) of the constitution of the PDP 2017 (As Amended).

The statement further accused Ayu of not voting during the Governorship and State Assembly Elections held on  March 18, 2023, while climaxing with the fact that it was also discovered that most of his closest allies worked for the opposition party, the All Progressive Congress, (APC), and hence, the abysmal performance of the PDP in Igyorov Ward.

With his resignation, Umar Damagum takes over as the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, pending the determination of the case in court.

Meanwhile, a High Court in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, has restrained Ayu from parading himself as chairman of the party pending the determination of a substantive suit which has been adjourned to April 17, 2023 for hearing.

A member of the PDP from Benue, Terhide Utaan, who is the plaintiff before Justice W. I Kpochi, obtained the order restraining Ayu from parading himself as national chairman of the party.

In a related development, Governor Wike on Monday, March 27th, 2023 expressed joy over the vote of no confidence passed on Ayu.

Wike said; “I am not from Benue State, but I am happy, and now that Benue State has done it, we would now come out and say we are in support of it.”
