The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reacted to the reappointment of Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Reacting to the appointment, the PDP urged Yakubu to improve future elections.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the spokesperson for the PDP in a statement on Wednesday, October 28, asked Yakubu to prepare for credible, free, and fair elections in Nigeria.
The opposition party also called on Yakubu to sanitise the Nigerian electoral system.
Ologbondiyan said the INEC chairman should use his next five-year tenure to remedy the image of the electoral commission.
He said: “It is therefore instructive to state that with his re-appointment, Prof Yakubu has been given an ample time and opportunity to redeem himself, the image of the commission and preparation for credible, free and fair elections in our country.”
The PDP spokesperson warned that the INEC chairman cannot make excuses based on inexperience or lack of adequate preparedness anymore.
He said Yakubu has almost two years to make the next general election credible. Ologbondiyan urged the INEC chairman to look into issues such as, rigging, violence, and inconclusive elections which marred elections in his previous tenure. The party noted that the bedrock of any democratic society rests on credible elections.
