Reactions have trailed a suit instituted by the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, challenging his impeachment.
Obasa, recently filed a lawsuit before a Lagos High Court seeking his immediate reinstatement.
Recall that the former Speaker was removed from office on January 13, 2025, while he was on a trip to America.
He is challenging the legality of his impeachment and is asking the court to nullify the decision and restore him as Speaker.
The suit which was filed on Thursday, February 13, named the current Speaker, Lasbat Mojisola Meranda, and the Lagos State House of Assembly as defendants.
In the suit, Obasa argued that the plenary session where he was impeached was not properly convened, rendering the proceedings unconstitutional. He contends that lawmakers met during a recess without formally reconvening, violating constitutional provisions and the Assembly’s standing orders.
Furthermore, he insisted that the impeachment was conducted outside legal procedures and should therefore be invalidated. The case has not yet been assigned to a judge, and no hearing date has been scheduled.
Meanwhile, reactions that have trailed the suit since it was filed have been mixed, with some saying that the court is the only way out for Obasa and others insisting the politician’s days as Speaker are over.
Akin Babalola while reacting to the development noted thus, “The court is the only way he will be reinstated for the Governor and Tinubu to save their faces.”
Oskirin expressed his opinion thus, “If your right is being infringe upon go to court to seek interpretation.’
There have also been those who have argued that the All Progressive Congress (APC), is being strategic, adding that with all that has happened, it’s only the court that can return Obasa back to office.
“Strategy will not kill APC, what a way back, only court can make his return look good,” Nonye Osagu said, adding that the court avenue was Obasa’s soft landing.
Mike Osue noted that Obasa was gone. Asked his opinion about the former Speaker’s impeachment, he simply said, “Gone Goner Gonest”.
Osue added that “if your people don’t want you, why do you want to force yourself on them? It doesn’t make sense. You want to rule over people who hate you in a democratic set up.”
Obasa has not returned to the assembly since his Impeachment, despite his office being taken over by the new Speaker, Miranda, he has continued to occupy his official residence in Ikeja, GRA, Lagos.
