The First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu has reacted to the sexual harassment scandal rocking the Senate.
Recall that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uguaghan had accused the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.
In an interview on Arise TV, on Friday, February 28, Akpoti-Uduaghan, stated that her trouble with Akpabio started after she turned down his sexual advances.
“My case is a case of a student being punished by a lecturer for refusing to sleep with him,” she stated.
The senator from Kogi central who has now been suspended by the Senate for six months said Akpabio made sexual advances to her when she and her husband visited his home in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, for the senate president’s birthday celebration in December 2023.
Reacting to the development, Tinubu said that she belief that the senate is taking necessary steps to address the allegations.
She said: “I know with what is going on in the senate, you may say, why am I not taking a position? I believe that senate is doing what is needful, because that’s what it is.”
“We shouldn’t be hearing things like that. It’s a matured chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honour for you to be in that place alone.
“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young, but people compliment you all the time. Women, raise yourself, don’t be in a position that men will be talking to you anyhow. You can always shut them down before they start,” she added
The controversy between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uguaghan began on February 20, when the duo engaged in a heated debate over seating arrangements in the upper legislative chamber.
Akpoti-Uduaghan later alleged that her troubles started after she rejected Akpabio’s sexual advances.
A sexual harassment petition which she she submitted against Akpabio, has since been rejected by the senate committee on ethics and privileges as a result of due process and legal limitations.
