The House of Representatives has cleared the air on why it invited President Muhammadu Buhari.
There have been controversies over the invitation of the President by the lawmakers with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami stating that the House of Representatives does not have the constitutional power to summon the president.
Explaining why the president was invited by the lawmakers, spokesperson for the House, Benjamin Kalu, said that he was invited by the lawmakers over the high level of insecurity in the country.
Kalu said the invitation extended to President Buhari was not aimed at ridiculing him over security matters.
He stated this while speaking with newsmen on Thursday, December 10, in Abuja, adding that the president was rather invited for engagement with the House on ways to address security challenges in the country.
The lawmaker noted that the idea of the invitation was to have a feedback mechanism on the security situation in the country, stressing that the partnership established by the 9th Assembly with the executive would be sustained.
Kalu stressed that since Nigeria was operating a democracy hinged on party supremacy, the president can decide to follow the advice of his part on any issue.
He said: “The president is not more powerful than the party, but if he took a decision and his party took another, he must oblige the party.” The House spokesman said that the House did not act in error by inviting the president, adding that the house had the right to investigate issues bothering the country.
